Healthy First Steps®

Build a healthy future for you and your baby, and earn great rewards. Our UnitedHealthcare Healthy First Steps® program helps keep you and your baby healthy during pregnancy and your baby’s first 15 months of life.

We’ll help you:

  • Choose a pregnancy provider and a pediatrician (child’s doctor).
  • Schedule visits and exams and arrange rides to your visits.
  • Earn rewards for going to visits throughout your pregnancy and baby’s first 15 months of life.
  • Get supplies, including breast pumps for nursing moms.
  • Connect with community resources such as Women, Infants and Children (WIC) services.

We offer educational events for pregnant moms. Learn how to take good care of yourself and your baby during pregnancy and after delivery. 


Find Help

Aunt Bertha is a web-based application that matches you with support services. Find the best fit for your needs close to home. Services include:

Extra Transportation

Transportation is available to WIC appointments, prenatal/parenting classes and Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

Wandering and elopement

Wandering, also called elopement, is an issue that affects some individuals with disabilities. We provide members and families with door and window alarms (up to six per household) to help minimize wandering. 


On My Way (OMW) program

OMW is an online program for young adult members age 19–21. It helps smooth the transition from foster care or the parents’/guardians’ home to independent living. OMW teaches skills for money, housing, job training and college.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • To apply for Medicaid, send a completed application to DHHS. Applications can be done online at iServe Nebraska. To renew your Medicaid coverage, visit ACCESSNebraska.

    You can also complete an application by phone. Or fill out and mail it to your nearest DHHS office.

  • It’s taken care of automatically. Your baby is pre-enrolled in your health plan as part of your pregnancy care. 

  • After your health plan begins you will have 90 days to change it. After that 90-day timeframe, you may only change your health plan during the Open Enrollment period.

  • No. family members can see different doctors. We call a medical professional you see a Primary Care Provider or PCP. When you see the same PCP over time, it’s easier to develop a relationship with them. Each family member can have their own PCP, or you may all choose to see the same PCP. 

  • You may be eligible for Nebraska Medicaid if you are:

    • 65 years of age or older
    • An Individual under 65 years of age who has a disability, or is visually impaired according to Social Security guidelines
    • An Individual 18 years of age or younger
    • An adult age 19-64
    • A pregnant woman
    • A parent or caretaker
    • A former foster care youth
